The Euro plug power cord is aflat, two-pole, round-pin domestic AC power plug, rated for voltages upto 250 V and currents up to 2.5 A. It is acompromise design intended to connect low-power Class II appliances safely to the manydifferent forms of round-pin domestic power socket used acrossEurope.EU plugs are non-rewirable andmust be supplied attached to a power cord. The Europe plug power cord is unusual as the standard specifies only a plugpower cord, there is no socket-outlet designed specifically for use with it.
British Standard requires use of a three-wire grounded andfused plug for all connections to the power mains,It has a fuse built into theplug body. The fuse is normally 3, 5, 10 or 13A. Two-wire class II appliances are not earthedand often have a plastic grounding pin which only serves to open the shuttersof the outlet. The lack of such an earth pin on a type C plug makes itimpossible to connect it to a type G receptacle, although it can actually beforced into the socket by sticking a pointy (dry, non-metallic !) object intothe centre hole of the power outlet, which opens up the two other holes. UK plugs power cord are no doubt among thesafest in the world, but also among the most hulking and cumbersome. That’s whypeople often make fun of them saying that a British plug power cord is mostlybigger than the appliance it is connected to Moreover, the bottom-heavy designof the plug makes it a perfect caltrop.
The Europe plug power cord is physicallynot compatible with BS sockets. The UK wiring regulations permit ring circuitsand require a suitable fuse to be fitted in each plug to protect the appliance powercord; Europe plugs do not contain such fuses. BS contain a child-safetyshutter; clause BS requires that Europe plugs will not open the shutters. Insome types of BS socket (but not all)the safety mechanism can be tampered with so that a Europe plug may then beforced into the open line and neutral ports. The UK Electrical Safety Councilhas drawn attention to the fire risk associated with forcing Europe plugs powercord into BS sockets. There is also a risk of damage to both the plug powercord and socket. Europe plugs are also different from the similar looking BStwo-pin plugs.
